Visions of Education: Tom Conlon’s Radical Voice for Change

Editors: Jean Casey & Paul Brna

‘Technology without philosophy,’ Tom Conlon wrote, ‘is blind.’ That simple contrast summed up his abiding philosophy. His thinking about educational technology thus remains as relevant now as it was when he was writing… The papers in this collection are a model of careful scholarship in the service of that critical, radical intellect. – Lindsay Paterson, University of Edinburgh

Tom Conlon [was] a proponent of educational technology and its potential to change society for the better… not only a radical thinker, but also a prolific and creative producer of materials – a true visionary in computing, as well as education. – Steve Gregory, co-founder of Parallel Logic Programming Ltd

Teaching and learning were at the heart of Tom Conlon’s vision of education. Central to that vision was the importance of enabling learners (and teachers) to develop effective learning tools. For him, tools were key to the empowerment of the learner and critical thinking was crucial.

These beliefs informed his writing, the software he wrote and his critique of Government initiatives and paternalistic approaches to educational change. He inspires us to recognise the power of information technology to unlock new forms of communication, problem solving and creativity.

This selection of papers exemplifies Tom’s gift for clear communication and conveys well his search for meaning and the clarity of his voice. Above all it is a radical voice, a voice of skeptical, constructive enquiry.

Tom Conlon (1954 – 2008) was an educator, an expert in the use of computing technologies for learning and teaching, a skilled and creative software designer, an entrepreneur and a researcher in technology-enhanced learning.
