The Evergreen Sheela-na-gig 2019 Limited Edition Gliclee Print

(FREE POSTAGE AND PACKAGING WITHIN THE UK)

A unique limited-edition print to mark the imminent publication of the fourth volume of The Evergreen: A New Season in the North is now available from The Word Bank. The final volume in the series breaks with the tradition of Allan Ramsay and Patrick Geddes by featuring only female contributors: editorial, prose fiction and non-fiction, poetry and illustration.

To complement this all-female volume, twelve women artists, based mostly in Scotland, were enlisted to respond in their own way to the long tradition of stone carvings known as sheela-na-gigs. Sculpted in Europe, Britain and Ireland from the 12th Century, sheela-na-gigs are under-researched stone carvings of open-legged women still to be found embedded in walls, churches, and castles, often over doors and windows. Strange, ferocious, and playful, sheelas speak to the power and vitality of women.

The contributing artists are:

Mhairi Braden; Mina Braun; Saskia Cameron; Anupa Gardner; Diana Hope; Astrid Jaekel; Ailsa Johnson; Laura Richmond; Jo Ruessmann; Molly Soar; Louise Smurthwaite; Maria Stoian.

The result is a startling limited-edition A2 giclée print curated by Astrid Jaekel, available unframed.
