Johnston Terrace – Nancy Somerville

JOHNSTON TERRACE
3rd October 2010

We are grounded,
too intent on gutter-gazing
to soar. We lean over the wall
not seeing what’s before us,
peering down through the canopy
of autumn leaves,
into the locked garden
twenty feet below.

We slowly realise
we’re in them,
the treetops we think
block our view,
level with birds and berries
fruit of the roots
which grip soil and rock,
holding onto the history
of this place.

Nancy Somerville’s first collection of poetry, Waiting for Zebras was published by Red Squirrel Press (Scotland) in 2008

[Published in The Evergreen Vol. I]
